Liam Williams is not done yet. Far from it, in fact. The experienced Wales back’s return to Six Nations duty is set to be confirmed when Warren Gatland names his team for Friday night’s opener with France. At 33 and with 92 caps for his country, Williams is a relative veteran in what is now a callow Welsh team, so his return to the camp has to be seen as a considerable boost.
He missed the 2024 Six Nations because of his club employment in Japan and then last year’s autumn series due to a knee injury. ‘I think I’ve got a couple of years left, to be honest with you,’ Williams said, rejecting any notion he thought his international career had come to an end.
‘My aim is to get 100 caps for Wales and if that happens, it is the icing on the cake. If it doesn’t, then it doesn’t and that is just the way it is. But that’s my aim. Liam Williams has 92 caps for his country and is determined to bring up three figures.
The full back was largely absent in 2024 when Warren Gatland's side failed to win a match. Williams has played five Tests for the Lions and has an outside chance of making the next tour. ‘I have been speaking to Gats and he has been my coach for the last 12 or 13 years. We spoke post Australia what the plans are for the next couple of years.
‘I am just happy to be here and hopefully I can add something to the team. There is a great energy here in camp. Our backs are against the wall, but we don’t mind that all.’. Williams did play on Wales’ summer tour of Australia, but with him largely absent Gatland’s side had an annus horribilis, failing to win a match in 2024.
