It’s official: London is Europe’s most congested city for the fourth year in a row, beating out the likes of Paris and Dublin. The report found that London’s drivers spent 101 hours in traffic last year. Paris came in second place in Europe with 97 hours, and Dublin rounded off the top three with its citizens spending 81 hours delayed in traffic. The statistics come as it was revealed recently that Central London’s roads are the world’s slowest city roads for drivers.

On a global scale, London was the fifth most congested city in the world in 2024. Istanbul led the pack with 105 hours, followed by New York, Chicago and Mexico City. Bath and Bristol were the seventh and tenth most congested cities in Europe when it came to traffic delay times, the report found.

In total, the report found that London’s traffic delays cost the city’s drivers around £942 in 2024, which comes to a staggering total of £3.85bn. Bob Pishue, the author of the report and an analyst at INRIX, said that the capital’s congestion rates have “remained steady”, and attributed long delays to roadworks in the city’s key corridors, such as the M25 Wisley interchange.

“Interestingly it was cities outside of the capital that saw the greatest increase in congestion, with Manchester seeing a large increase, up 13 per cent,” he said. Comparatively, London’s hours lost to traffic only increased by 2 per cent from 2023.
