Manchester United have had to push back Patrick Dorgu's medical with the club - just days before transfer deadline day. Ruben Amorim is desperate for players who fit with his 3-4-3 system and United believe the £33million-rated Lecce wing-back fits the bill. United and Lecce held positive talks over a £30m move including add-ons earlier this week, as revealed by Mail Sport. But now a sense of jeopardy has been injected into the day due to the medical delay and the 20-year-old is only expected to fly to England over the weekend.
It was pushed back because the relevant documentation and contracts were not completed on time for the original test. The transfer window slams shut at 11pm on Monday, February 3, meaning United cannot afford for there to be too many hold-ups. Manchester United have pushed back Patrick Dorgu's medical as some paperwork wasn't completed on time. They have until 11pm on Monday night to seal the deal for the 20-year-old Lecce wing-back.
Ruben Amorim is eager to bring in players who suit his 3-4-3 system which thrived in Portugal. All the same, Dorgu is edging towards becoming Amorim's first signing since taking the job in Novemebr. Amorim admitted incomings would be difficult ehad of the window, saying: 'It's not the case I am not arriving here and I can spend a lot of money, changing all the team.'. United initally bid £16.8m plus £4.2m in add-ons, but that was rejected by a Lecce side who have been reluctant to sell all along.
Mail Sport understands that Lecce initially wanted £33m for the full-back. Dorgu's contract with the Serie A side runs until 2029 and club president Saverio Sticchi Damiani claimed his team would 'resist' selling stars if they can. Lecce are in the Serie A relegation zone. United had initially targeted Nuno Mendes at Paris Saint-Germain but that was always a difficult deal due to the expense. Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez was another under consideration but again would not be sold cheaply.
Dorgu will be a good utility option. He is 6ft 2in tall, has four caps for Denmark and can also play as a winger. He started out in his youth career at Copenhagen-based side Husum Boldklub before moving to Nordsjaelland's youth academy. United and Lecce held positive talks over a £30m move including add-ons earlier this week. In 2022 he signed for Lecce and a year later he was promoted to the senior team, making his debut in August 2023 in the Coppa Italia.
