The Football Writers' Association south of the border wrote: "It is with the greatest sadness that we must announce the death of our dear Patrick Barclay.

Man Utd wrote on social media: "Paddy will always be held in great esteem by everyone at Manchester United and we send our sympathies to his loved ones at this time.".

He also wrote biographies on Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson and for many he will be best known for his contributions to the Sunday Supplement newspaper review show on Sky Sports.
