Manchester United have booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup after a dramatic late winner over Leicester City. United toiled again in front of their owns fans with Bobby De Cordova-Reid putting the visitors in front just before half-time. Alejandro Garnacho’s introduction off the bench lifted United and the Argentine was heavily involved in his side’s equaliser with his cross eventually finding its way to Joshua Zirkzee to tap home.
With extra-time looming, Harry Maguire met Bruno Fernandes’ cross with a powerful header to send his former side crashing out of the competition. The England international appeared to have strayed into an offside position before his header found the back of the net. But with no VAR in place at this stage of the competition, the goal stood as United survived a major scare on home turf. Relive the action below….
Maguire’s header against his former club seals it! Brutal on Leicester, United were appalling for large portions of the match but they get the job done. United finally get a set piece right! Fernandes’ loops a sublime ball into the box and Maguire follows it all the way, hammering his header across goal and into the back of the net. Was he stood offside? There’s no VAR tonight so this one will stand.
Harry Maguire bails United out!. Three minutes of injury time added on. Woeful from Hojlund who twice in the space of five seconds can’t take the ball under control. Garnacho and Zirkzee harry around him to stop Leicester countering and United continue to push. It’s Garnacho again – he plays a neat one two with Dalot and takes the shot on from a narrow angle, drilling a poor effort into the side netting. Hojlund stamps his feet in anger – both he and Zirkzee were free yards out from goal.
Garnacho causing havoc again – he wins yet another corner. United need to make one of these count. Garnacho has changed the game for United so you can maybe forgive him for this one – he cuts inside and wallops a poor effort high and wide. United have their equaliser! Garnacho, denied a goal moments ago, is again at the heart of it, driving towards the byline and firing across goal. Hojlund’s effort is blocked but it breaks kindly to Zirkzee to tap home.
Mainoo loses the ball in midfield again and Fernandes gives him an earful. This is easy for Leicester. Mainoo has struggled all evening and Amorim has seen enough, Joshua Zirkzee comes onto replace him. Garnacho is injecting a little bit of life into this United side. But we’re still waiting for their first shot on target. Now Mazraoui can’t get a throw-in right. Foul throw given. Same, shambolic stuff from United at the start of this half. Virtually every pass is loose and there is zero energy out there from the hosts.
Patrick Dorgu has been hooked at the break on his debut. Uh oh…. Alejandro Garnacho is onto replace him. Rotten from United as boos ring out as the half-time whistle blows. Dreadful, dreadful stuff from United. Ugarte loses the ball on the edge of the box and Leicester pounce. El Khannouss picks it upl and drives towards the byline, finding Ndidi unmarked in the six yard area. Onana keeps his effort out with his feet but Cordova-Reid pounces on the rebound.
Well, it’s been coming. A few groans from around Old Trafford as Mainoo passes backwards as United look to mount forward. It’s… not been great so far. Dorgu has looked bright on his debut but the decision for him to start on the right is a puzzling one. Dalot has continued to struggle over on the left and the time it takes each man to come inside on their stronger foot is costing United in the rare moments they find themselves going forward.
