Aston Villa signed five players during the mid-season transfer window but were only permitted to add three of them to their UEFA Champions League squad. Unai Emery's side qualified directly for the round of 16 in Europe's top tournament by finishing eighth during the league phase. Villa will therefore not be in European action again until early March when they will meet Club Brugge, Atalanta, Sporting Lisbon or Borussia Dortmund.

However, they still needed to confirm their updated squad list by Thursday night. Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi - who all joined Villa on loan earlier this month - made it in. But Donyell Malen, a £21million January arrival from Borussia Dortmund, and Andres Garcia, a £6m signing from Levante, have missed out. Marcus Rashford has been added to Aston Villa's Champions League squad following his mid-season arrival on loan from Manchester United.

But £21m January signing Donyell Malen will not be able to play for Villa in this season's UCL. Villa manager Unai Emery was only able to add three new players to his UCL squad this week. Space for the new additions was made by Villa selling three players in January as Jaden Philogene, Diego Carlos and Jhon Duran moved on to Ipswich, Fenerbahce and Al-Nassr respectively. 'The rules are that we can register three changes,' manager Emery explained on Friday.

'We did more changes in the transfer window than we wanted. We lost one player more in the list as Jaden Philogene was a club-trained player. 'We lost as well the opportunity through him to have one more [player in the squad]. We changed five players and only we can register three. We had to take the decision yesterday. 'They are out Andres Garcia and Donyell Malen. It was not a good decision I had to take. I spoke to Andres and Malen to tell them the decision. I argued my decision with them.'.
