Mathys Tel’s agent has fuelled speculation linking the young Bayern Munich forward with a stunning deadline-day move to Tottenham. Manchester United are understood to have seen two separate offers knocked back for Tel, 19, while Arsenal have also been exploring a possible deal in the final few hours of the January transfer window. But according to Sky Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg, the France Under-21 international – who has made just two league starts for Bayern this season – is on the cusp of completing a temporary switch to Spurs.

Tottenham had initially looked to have wrapped up a permanent move for Tel after Daniel Levy travelled to Munich and agreed a £50million fee with Bayern, only for the teenage attacker to turn down Ange Postecoglou’s side. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that an agreement has now been reached with all parties over a loan, with no buy option included for the north Londoners. Tel becomes Tottenham’s third piece of business this January following deals for Kevin Danso and Luka Vuskovic.

Just moments before news of the sensational U-turn broke, Tel’s representative, Gadiri Camara, shared a photograph with an egg timer emoji on his Instagram page, showing him posing on an airplane. According to Sky Sports News, the flight in question is destined for London and official confirmation of Tel’s arrival is expected imminently. Romano subsequently shared a photograph showing Tel and Camara sharing a joke on board the private jet.

Facing the media last week, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that Tel had asked for permission to leave the club, having initially intimated he was keen to stay put. ‘Mathys decided at the time [in December] that he wanted to stay, that he wanted to assert himself. Now Mathys comes along and says that he can imagine doing something,’ he told reporters. ‘And now we have to think about what we are going to do, whether we are going to do it. The playing time is not satisfactory for him, and that is understandable.

‘It is now the end of January. And now it is more difficult for everyone involved. We have to see what is ultimately best for everyone involved, for Mathys and for Bayern Munich.’. Discussing the sensational developments on Sky Sports News, Paul Merson suggested Tottenham fans would be less than impressed with Tel’s toing and froing this January.

‘Mathys Tel can’t go to Spurs now. Fans won’t be happy with that,’ the ex-Arsenal and England midfielder said. ‘As soon as they’ve heard that he doesn’t want to join, and those three other clubs don’t come in for him and then he ends up at Tottenham, the fans won’t be happy with that. ‘I wouldn’t say it’s embarrassing for Spurs. He’s coming from Bayern Munich, he’s not coming from a lesser team.

‘No disrespect to Tottenham, but he’s coming from a huge team. He’s got to get the right move.’. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
