A provocative new Channel 4 series which promises to challenge the way people feel about immigration and asylum seekers begins tonight (February 3). The four-part series, titled Go Back to Where You Came From, will see a group of six British people with strong opinions about immigration experience the lives and struggles of refugees and migrants first-hand. The group, which includes a TikToker and GB News commentator, will begin their journey in Mogadishu in Somalia and Raqqa in Syria, before travelling on dangerous migrant routes through Africa, the Middle East and Europe into the UK.
The series synopsis reads: "The show will immerse an opinionated group of six Brits, with views across the immigration argument, in the reality of the perilous journeys refugees and migrants make to the UK. Starting on our UK borders, our contributors will first travel to the homelands that refugees are so desperate to leave.". The series has already come under fire from human rights groups, with Amnesty International claiming it is insensitive and fails to educate viewers. However, Channel 4 has defended the 'bold' show, citing that the Australian original on which it is based has since become part of the country's national curriculum.
It remains to be seen how the Channel 4 version will land with UK audiences, but before viewers dive in, it's time to meet the cast:. The chef turned TikToker hails from Nottingham. He says his anti-illegal immigration views stem from his mother's experience working for the Citizens Advice Bureau. Dave admitted he did not have a passport until he was 30 meaning the experience on the Channel 4 show was one of his few trips abroad.
He said he had thought the Channel 4 series “was a bit of a scam at first”, before seeing it as a “chance for me to see the other side of things, to see where these people come from and how they live, so for me it was to learn.". Chloe, who owns a paddleboarding business and regular contributes to GB News, graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. She says she was “gobsmacked by the poverty in Syria.".
“We were in the Kurdish part, north of Syria, in that area it seemed like it was relatively safe for civilians, but people were still fleeing because the poverty was off the scale,” she added. Dad-of-one Nathan said his experience on the show left him 'outraged'. “My son’s biggest worry is whether he’s got enough coins to buy stuff in his games,” he said, reflecting on his own life after seeing the conditions children lived in in Mogadishu.
Jess is a sports coach who lives in Carmarthenshire, Wales. She was recently involved in a protest against a hotel at Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli which had been set to be turned into housing for asylum seekers. Mathilda, from London, is a journalist, podcaster and refugee camp volunteer. Bushra is a business owner and socio-political commentator who appeared on BBC's The Apprentice back in 2017 with a modest clothing brand. Her parents are first generation immigrants from Pakistan.
After being on the show, Shaikh said: “I learned that there’s a lot of ignorance in the world, most of which stems from lack of education and resources... We need to learn from each other. Before I began the journey, I assumed most people would know about Islam – but they don’t. It showed me that we all need to take a step back and try to understand where others are coming from.". Channel 4's senior commissioning editors, Anna Miralis and Madonna Benjamin, said of the series: "This is an extremely bold commission that continues to reinforce the Channel’s commitment to tackle difficult and highly relevant subject matter. It is hoped that this will offer up an opportunity for the British public to help understand some of the terrifying perils asylum seekers face when they attempt to travel to the UK.
