Acclaimed Mexican actor Emilio Echevarría has died at the age of 80, it was announced on Monday by The Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. The star, who appeared in the James Bond movie Die Another Day and the Brad Pitt ensemble Babel, passed away on Saturday.

He is also known for the role of El Chivo opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s gritty underworld film Amores Perros from 2000. And he made two more projects with Bernal: Y Tu Mama Tambien and Mozart in the Jungle. The star was born in Mexico City and started acting in the 1970s. He went on to become a national treasure as he was nominated three times for Mexico’s Ariel Awards.

Though he entered the acting world in the 1970s, he did not get his big break until the late 1980s. Echevarría’s first role was in 1989's Intimidad then made Bathroom Intimacy and Los Pasos de Ana. His first major part came in the twisted drama Amores Perros.

The bilingual star then had a sizable role in the 2001 flick Y Tu Mamá También with Bernal as well as notable Mexican actor Diego Luna who is best known for Narcos. Next he stood out as intelligence operative and Bond ally Raoul opposite Brosnan in Die Another Day in 2002.
