Mikel Arteta has called on his Arsenal to 'recharge' after the 'painful' loss against Newcastle which snuffed up their Carabao Cup final hopes on Wednesday evening. The Gunners travelled to St James' Park with a view to overturning the 2-0 deficit of the first leg of their semi-final, which saw the hosts bettered at the Emirates last month. But within minutes, the visitors were on the back foot, and although Alexander Isak's fourth-minute goal was later ruled out for offside, it didn't take long for the Magpies to take control of the home tie.

Jacob Murphy netted in the 19th minute and Anthony Gordon confirmed Eddie Howe's side's place in the Wembley final - where they will meet either Liverpool or Tottenham in March. Just days after their thrashing of Manchester City 5-1, Arteta's players will be forced to take stock after losing 4-0 on aggregate, their wait for a domestic trophy rolling on. And Arteta was keen to see his side take in the fullness of the defeat during their time off - with the squad set to travel to Dubai for warm-weather training while Premier League rivals play their FA Cup fourth-round matches.

Arsenal were beaten 4-0 on aggregate by Newcastle to end their Carabao Cup final hopes. Mikel Arteta described the defeat as a 'painful' one that his players would need to 'swallow'. 'We need to swallow this one, it is a tough one,' Arteta said after full-time. 'We had a lot of expectations. 'We knew the difficulty of the task because of the result we brought from London. but there is nothing we can do right now.

'What we could do was on the pitch a few minutes ago, now we have to look forward. First of all, I think this is going to be a painful one. 'While we are in Dubai, recharge and go again because we still have a lot to play (for).'. Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup in their first match of the season, falling to Manchester United on penalties at the Emirates. But their hopes in Europe remain alive after the side qualified automatically for a spot in the knockout phases.
