People are ditching luxury items in favour of everyday essentials for their Christmas wishlists this year. Gen Z - have infiltrated TikTok with their festive requests, which range from reusable carry out cups and electric toothbrushes to pyjama sets and even a Ring doorbell.

According to Joshua Houston, a Leicestershire-based sustainability expert at GreenMatch, this is a trend borne out of soaring inflation, with things now so dire that the average cost of a Christmas dinner has risen by 6.5 per cent in just one year. Speaking to Femail, he explained that in order to 'save money', young people have chosen 'useful items' for their Christmas list, while some have radically vetoed the custom completely.

The knock-on effect has landed on merry wellwishers, who it appears have had to improvise in order to receive any Christmas presents at all. Kay Donnelly from Manchester recently shared her Christmas 'must haves', which were a compilation of necessities that included a reusable cup and rechargeable toothbrush.

The mother-of-two took to TikTok saying: 'First things first, we have got the Barbie Stanley [cup]. Now I have actually wanted this since when it first came out but I just can't justify spending [the money] on myself'. The doting mother held up a device showing a picture of the pink steel cup, which retails for £55 on the Stanley website, and even less on other sites.
