Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is facing potential fines and a possible suspension after erupting at referee Jenna Schroeder before and after his second-quarter ejection from Monday's 116-106 win over the San Antonio Spurs. As NBA sources have told DailyMail.com, the league won't hold back on the mercurial seven-footer, who has been on an emotional roller coaster this season as he's appeared in just eight games due to injuries, suspensions and the team's controversial strategy of resting him on the second leg of back-to-back games.
'Though the ref is without question an equal and doesn't need to be protected in a certain way from her male counter parts, the NBA is looking to come down big on Embiid who has been an emotional mess all season,' a league source told DailyMaill.com. One source suggested the Sixers could ask him to go to anger management or step away from the team. However, a club spokesman rejected the source's claims in an email to DailyMail.com, including the idea that Embiid could be asked to step away.
'He's definitely going through something, and this is just another escalation,' the source added. Now on a 7-3 run after a 3-14 start to the season, the Sixers are quickly losing their patience with Embiid, who previously had a physical altercation with a reporter that resulted in a three-game ban.
