For the first time ever, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will face each other in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. On January 21, at around 9.30am, Djokovic and Alcaraz will clash in the last-eight of the Australian Open. This will be their first encounter since their epic battle at Roland Garros during the Olympic Games, where Djokovic clinched his first-ever Olympic gold medal with a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Alcaraz.

Since 2022, the Serbian and the Spaniard have locked horns seven times, with four of these clashes taking place in major finals. Djokovic emerged victorious in the 2024 Olympic gold medal match and the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati in 2023, while Alcaraz triumphed in the last two Wimbledon finals.

Usually, this is a fixture fans would only see in the final matches of a competition. Ahead of their earlier-than-usual contest, Mirror Sport has a look at the rivalry that is quickly developing between the duo. Currently, Djokovic holds the upper hand in the head-to-head record against Alcaraz. Out of their seven encounters, the Serbian has claimed four victories, compared to Alcaraz's three.

However, two of Alcaraz's wins were secured in the Wimbledon final, the first being a nail-biting five-setter that he won 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, and the second a dominant straight-sets victory a year later. Djokovic will draw significant confidence from his gold medal win over Alcaraz, who was heavily favoured ahead of their clash.

Adding to the intrigue for tennis enthusiasts, Djokovic has enlisted the help of Andy Murray as part of his coaching team Down Under. On a hard court, however, Djokovic boasts an unblemished record against the Spaniard, having triumphed at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters final and the 2023 Nitto ATP semi-final.
