Now Gen Z are giving Christmas dinners a 'woke' rebrand with gluten-free mince pies, coconut-oil roasties and vegan pigs in blankets

Christmas dinner in 2024 doesn't look quite like it used to - at least in households where Gen Z is involved in the cooking. Britain's annual festive meal is much more likely to comprise plant-based and gluten-free dishes - with everything from mince pies and pigs in blankets enjoying a 'woke' makeover to suit modern tastes.
According to new supermarket data generated by Ocado, 37 per cent of shoppers say they'll be bypassing the famous turkey altogether this year, with 33 per cent of Gen Z declaring they'll actually be cooking a Christmas duck instead. Meanwhile, a number of shoppers have elected to incorporate new additions into the customary meal, such as coconut-oil roast potatoes and gluten-free bread sauce.
This makes for a stark contrast to the usual celebratory dinner of roast turkey, roast potatoes, and all the usual trimmings of cranberry sauce and stuffing. However, according to the survey of 2000 shoppers conducted by the online supermarket, Gen Zs are yet to turn their backs on Yorkshire puddings, with sales of the baked side soaring to a whopping 147 per cent this month.
Sharing this sentiment is a wave of content creators who have taken to TikTok to showcase how they'll be departing from the conventional Christmas dinner in 2024. Cooking influencer Elly's Plate from London showed off her 'fully vegan' maple pigs in blankets, which she claimed are so good they'll 'answer your prayers'.
