A CELEB-LOVED seaside village is up in arms over a "Benidorm-style" hotel planned for the waterfront. The stunning staycation is a hotspot for holidaymakers including Colleen Rooney and Bear Grylls. It's been dubbed "Cheshire on Sea" because of the number of visitors crossing over the border.
The multi-million pound development has been in the pipeline for almost 10 years but is finally being built in Abersoch - the Welsh village dubbed "Cheshire-by-the-Sea". But the 42 hotel room and 18 apartment development planned for the former fishing village has been blasted as "horrendous" and "out of place" for the seafront in Gwynedd, North Wales.
Locals commenting on a picture posted online said the hotel looked like it should be in Benidorm or the Algarve - saying it was a "carbuncle on the landscape.". Ruben Owen who posted the picture, said he was in favour of the hotel due to the economic benefits it could bring.
He said: "I think the new hotel development in Abersoch by Bespoke Hotels is a fantastic and much-needed addition to the area. "It has the potential to create year-round opportunities, bring in jobs, and attract more visitors, all of which will benefit the local economy and community.".
"While change often sparks debate it's important to recognize that not all change is negative. This development is a great example of positive progress. "Compared to the abandoned hotel, derelict work huts, overgrown mess, and potholed car park that once occupied the site this project represents a huge improvement and a bright future for Abersoch.".
