To perm or not to perm? The answer seems to be a resounding yes, judging by the men of all ages lining up to achieve the textured waves inspired by the likes of James Norton. An army of today’s top male stars have been sporting wavy textured hair, led by Norton, Paul Mescal and Jeremy Allen White.

Happy Valley’s Norton had social media in a swooning frenzy when he flashed his coiled coiffed barnet in its full glory at last month’s GQ Men Of The Year Awards. The Bear star Allen White has also become a sex symbol thanks in part to his signature loose waves, while Gladiator II star Paul Mescal sports tousled curls framing his boyish face.

Perms were a huge money spinner in the 80s but they went out of favour for decades. Over the past 30 years even men and women blessed with natural spiral strands have often opted to straighten their curls. One of the most famous amongst them, Justin Timberlake who bravely flaunted his curls in the early late 90s as a member of pop group NSYNC. But he was mocked for his hairstyle at the time.

Curl enthusiasts will be hoping the 43-year-old will return to his roots now it’s back on trend. Happy Valley's James Norton had social media in a swooning frenzy when he flashed his coiled coiffed barnet in its full glory at last month’s GQ Men Of The Year Awards.

Oon Ng, director of London-based NOH hair, told The Guardian that perms are in hot demand with male clients these days and that his salon is now doing six to 10 perms a week. ‘All you have to do is wash and put some styling product in, and then let it dry,’ he said.
