In an emotional interview with The Sun that was published on Monday, Coote then came out as gay, while he also spoke publicly for the first time since he was dismissed. During his time in the game, the official rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest sportsmen in the world via the Premier League.

But, he is not the only Coote to have been involved in sport - and his father's surprise career has come to light in recent times. David Coote Snr is a former cricketer who played for Nottinghamshire, the county where the former referee grew up and has lived in.

Coote Snr was a left-handed batter, although he played just once for the county in first-class cricket, while he also made a singular one-day appearance. His only first-class match came in the 1977 County Championship against Yorkshire.
