Manchester United have used Tyrell Malacia's exit to send a message that they'll no longer be a soft touch when selling players. Malacia, 25, completed a move back to the Netherlands on Tuesday, joining PSV Eindhoven on loan. But that wasn't the original plan for the left-back, who was ready to join Benfica before the move broke down. Talks had reached an advanced stage, with Malacia looking for much needed game-time after Ruben Amorim made him surplus to requirements. United's sole addition of the winter transfer window was another left-back, paying £25million to sign Patrick Dorgu.

Once Dorgu's arrival was confirmed, Malacia was free to seal a loan move to Benfica. The deal would've included an obligation to buy and that was the sticking point between the clubs. According to the Mail, Benfica made a low-ball offer which United deemed unacceptable. The Lisbon-based club weren't willing to meet the Red Devils' demands and negotiations subsequently broke down. It's hoped that United, who are often criticised for letting players go on the cheap, will now be seen as tougher negotiators. Part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is actively making changes to balance the books at Old Trafford and offloading players on more favourable terms would certainly be a step in the right direction.

Malacia, who United signed in the summer of 2022 for £13m, has now returned home to the Netherlands. PSV will have to pay £8.3m to sign him permanently, a fee which Ratcliffe and Co. deem more acceptable. "I'm happy to be here," the 25-year-old said to PSV's in-house media after joining them. Finally playing good football again. I am coming off a long injury, but by now I am fit and know that my time will come again.

"In every tough period there are also positive elements and in this case that is that I have become much stronger physically and mentally. I have more patience, am more mature, know my body better and things like that. I'm ready to pop and hopefully win several prizes with PSV.". PSV director of football Earnie Stewart added: "We are very happy to welcome with Tyrell a player who can be of immediate value for PSV. Tyrell has a lot of experience at the highest level and is also a player with a lot of potential. We look forward to seeing him in action.".

Malacia won't be eligible to make his debut in PSV's home game against his former club, Feyenoord, on Wednesday.
