The club’s president Caroline Kirkendoll told councillors the plans would bring £8m-worth of investment to a currently empty building, and that it would aim to have a “diverse” range of events alongside strip performances.
In a letter of objection ahead of a hearing at Westminster City Council on Thursday, one resident said: “Soho's changing nature means that increasingly families include a visit to the neighbourhood in their weekends or as part of their tourist visit to the city.
“The applicant's proposal to bring back an adult entertainment venue in this building block represents an opportunity to maintain and protect this culturally significant characteristic of Soho,” one supportive resident wrote.
Some residents, and the Soho Society, have hit out at the plans over its nude performances, saying it risks dragging Soho back into a seedier era.
The Penthouse Club, which has venues in the United States, Australia and Russia, plans to open on the site of the former Madame JoJo’s in Soho’s Walker’s Court.
