It may have taken Marcus Edwards less than twenty minutes to find the back of the net on his Burnley debut, but this was a goal that was years in the making. From his early days at Tottenham - where he was dubbed the ‘Mini Messi’ - to his developing years spent in Portugal, Edwards’ hard work seems to finally be paying off. The 26-year-old sealed a surprise move to Turf Moor last month - on a loan with an obligation to buy - but has had to be patient in waiting to make his Burnley debut.

And it took just 18 minutes for him to do so, after a defensive calamity from the Saints saw the former Sporting Lisbon man poke home from close range. He wheeled away in celebration with his new teammates, while stunned Southampton were given a potential glimpse into their future - as they stare down the barrel of an inevitable return to the Championship.
