Carlisle United are considering making a shock approach to Steven Gerrard. The bottom-of-the-table League Two side sacked manager Mike Williamson on Monday morning, and Mail Sport understands that the club’s American owners have raised the unlikely prospect of the Liverpool legend taking over in a desperate bid to stop them dropping out of the EFL. Gerrard, who has managed Rangers and Aston Villa, left a lucrative role with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq last week after 18 months in charge.

A scenario which sees the former England captain agreeing to oversee a League Two relegation scrap, albeit to a club with a loyal and large support, would be viewed by most as a long-shot. Indeed, ex-Bolton boss Ian Evatt is the bookmakers’ favourite - but sources have disclosed that an approach to Gerrard has been raised by the Americans, who took over at Brunton Park in November 2023. Carlisle pulled the trigger on ex-Newcastle defender and Gateshead boss Williamson on deadline day, with no fewer than 12 players brought to the club in the current window.

League Two basement boys Carlisle want Steven Gerrard to become their new manager. It comes just four days after Gerrard parted ways with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Carlisle sacked Mike Williamson on Monday morning with the club bottom of League Two. In August, they sacked Paul Simpson a day after the summer window had closed. Simpson had also signed 12 players before deadline. Following Williamson’s departure the Cumbrians find themselves five points from safety.
In his first managerial role following a stellar playing career that saw him lift nine trophies, Gerrard lead Rangers to a first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years. The 44-year-old succeeded Dean Smith at Villa Park in November 2021 but departed 11 months later following 13 wins in 40 games. In his first season at Al-Ettifaq, which does not benefit from government funding, he guided his new side to sixth and revolutionised their off-field set-up.
