Presenter Kate Garraway spoke about having "excessive unpayable debt" as a result of funding care for her late husband Derek Draper whilst questioning a cabinet minister. Derek passed away aged 56, in January last year following health issues in recent years, including having been hospitalised for over a year during the Covid pandemic. His wife Kate, 57, has previously spoken about the cost of his care, saying in a documentary last year that his care costs were "more than" her salary from ITV, adding: "Unlike the NHS, state-funded social care is only available to people with the highest needs and the lowest means.".

As reported on Friday, plans to launch an independent probe into social care, to pave the way for the National Care Service that Labour promised in its manifesto, have been announced. The review with start in April but is not due to finish until 2028.

Friday's episode of Good Morning Britain saw Kate question Wes Streeting, 41, who is the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, on proposals for the long-term funding of adult social care in England being unlikely to be delivered before 2028 following the news. She noted in the exchange that it was the first anniversary of Derek's death on the same day as the interview.

Kate told Mr Streeting: "I'm going to be honest. In my mind, I'm thinking about the situation with Derek. It actually happens to be the anniversary of his death, one-year anniversary of his death, today, which is a day only relevant to me, but over the last few weeks, the family and I have been talking about the challenges we faced this time last year.
