Ange Postecoglou has responded to Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens after his comments appeared to suggest the Tottenham boss has used his side’s injuries as an excuse this season. Tottenham could have as many as 11 first team players absent through injury when they visit Aston Villa at Villa Park in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday evening. Spurs have been plighted by injury for much of the season.

In a press conference, Orient’s Wellens had responded to a question last week by saying: “I'm not Ange Postecoglou, keep using it as an excuse.”. Orient and Tottenham share a healthy relationship, with Harry Kane the most notable among a number of players Spurs have loaned to the O’s down the years. Two of the club’s current first-team squad — goalkeeper Josh Keeley and forward Jamie Donley — are currently on season-long loans at Brisbane Road.

A reminder of the club’s tight relationship led Wellens to apologise in a Leyton Orient statement for his “stupid comment”. On Friday, the morning after Tottenham’s 4-0 Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat to Liverpool, Postecoglou was asked whether Wellens had been in touch to apologise personally. “He's had his five minutes, that's good enough for me”, he said. Postecoglou was asked whether supporters and pundits might be beginning to grow tired of the narrative amid the suggestion he can regularly be heard mentioning Tottenham’s unprecedented injury woes.

“I don't know how it's a narrative when you are just stating facts,” the Aussie said. “If people don't see a situation where you are missing something significant, there is nothing I can say to that. If they say ‘well, that shouldn't really make a difference’, I don't know how to answer that. “I get that people's senses get dulled or people get bored — everyone wants a bit of drama. But that's not drama, that's just stating facts.”.
