Unforgotten star MyAnna Buring has revealed that she "threw up in my mouth" while auditioning for her role. The actor, known for her roles in The Witcher and Ripper Street, plays outspoken political commentator Melinda Ricci in the show's upcoming sixth season - which begins on Sunday (February 9). Melinda is one of the main subjects in the latest murder inquiry, and works for a cable news channel in Ireland.
She presents a news segment called Mel's Minute, which covers topics such as immigration, benefit cheats and anti-abortion. Ahead of the season premiere, MyAnna detailed her shock after reading her character's strong views, which heavily oppose her own. "One of my audition scenes was a Mel's Minute, which are what I call 'puff pieces' because they are extreme views presented quite lightly and quite cruelly to camera," she said.
"When I first read them, I literally threw up in my mouth, so I think it's fair to say that I hold very different views to Mel or the ones that she presents.". The actor went on to tease Melinda's integral part in the new season, describing her complexity as a character. "She's deeply religious, carrying real Catholic guilt, and she's also engaged to Patrick (Emmett J Scanlan), a man with whom she seemingly has finally found love and a sense of security," MyAnna explained.
"Prior to when our stories start, Patrick and Melinda have been in a rather horrific car accident which has left Patrick, this very physically active man, effectively disabled from the waist down. "And they are coming to terms with that, with the accident, and the idea of him being paralysed, the effect of that on their life.". Season six will see Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar reprise their leading roles as DCI Jessica James and DI Sunny Khan, respectively.
