Vera's Brenda Blethyn teases 'clash' with David Leon in final series amid death fears

Brenda Blethyn has hinted at a significant on-screen confrontation between her character and David Leon's in the final series of the popular drama, following his unexpected comeback last year. David was Brenda's co-star when Vera first aired on ITV in 2011, portraying DCI Stanhope's trusted aide Joe Ashworth for the initial four seasons. His sudden departure shocked both Brenda and the show's fans, leading to Kenny Doughty stepping into the role.
Interestingly, it was Kenny's own departure in 2023 that opened the door for David's return, with Brenda confessing at a London event last month that she would have quit if another sidekick had been introduced. The character made a comeback in the 13th series earlier this year, announcing to his ex-colleagues at Northumberland and City Police that he was there to 'observe' them, after certain flaws in their investigative methods raised concerns.
However, by the series finale, David's character had resumed his position as Vera's right-hand man, while also grappling with personal issues stemming from his father's terminal illness. Brenda has hinted that Joe's downward spiral and his aggressive attitude towards Vera in the final series stem from his father's death. Brenda shed light on their strained relationship, saying: "In the first episode she suspects Joe is not coping with the death of his father and it becomes a bit of an issue, it's fair to say.".
She added: "There’s something up with Joe at the start of this series. He’s dragging his feet. Vera obviously has a soft spot for Joe. But she doesn’t carry people. Everyone has to pull their weight. And if there is something up, say what it is.
