A couple who came under fire for naming their new baby boy Lucifer have revealed that the child's more traditional middle name of Gary drew perhaps even more criticism from online trolls. Jess Bell, 25, and Stefan Wake, 27, chose Lucifer for their son after they enjoyed the Netflix series of the same name.

The couple from Redcar, North Yorkshire, insist that the true meaning of Lucifer is 'light bringer' - while Gary was chosen to honour Jess's uncle who died in childhood. A strange coincidence at the hospital, however, did little to dispel the traditional devilish associations of their baby's first name.

Lucifer was born in delivery room number six after which Jess and her new baby were moved to bed number six in room number six at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. The online abuse began when the hospital included Lucifer, who was born on January 1, in a Facebook post about New Year babies.

So virulent were some of the comments that the hospital was forced to ask for the abuse to be removed from Facebook. Yet the 'awful' comments were not only directed at the couple's choice of Lucifer for the first name - they were also critical of the baby's middle name, Gary.

Jess Bell and Stefan Wade called their new baby boy Lucifer, which means 'light bringer'. Jess told The Northern Echo: 'We received quite a bit of abuse online from people saying awful things. 'Someone even criticised his middle name - which is Gary after my uncle who died as a child. Both names really mean something to us and it's unfair for people to pass judgement on us.'.
