We’ve all been there: you’re sitting around the table on Christmas Day playing Monopoly with your family, only for the whole thing to descend into a huge argument over whether you should put tax money under the Free Parking square, or whether you get more cash for landing directly on GO.
So now’s the time to settle it once and for all. Amber Crook, editorial chief and rules expert at GameRules.com, has debunked bogus Monopoly Rules so you don’t fall foul of any chancers this Christmas. We suggest printing them out and tapping them in a mildly threatening manner should any of your siblings step out of line….
'Collect £M200 as you pass GO' is the most well-known of all Monopoly rules. But more and more households have decided that if you land directly on GO, you receive double the amount. 'While this may have helped you out of sticky situations in previous games, it is not actually a rule and only serves to make the game to go on longer than it needs to be,' says Amber.
'If you land on GO, you should only receive £M200 from the bank, in the same way as if you were passing GO.'. . Okay, this is one I'm guilty of - but it's actually fake news that any in-game fines and taxes should be stashed under the Free Parking Square. 'While it may add an exciting element of luck to the game,' Amber explains, 'this is unfortunately not a real rule.'.
