Adam Sandler fans gush his emotional SNL50 performance was 'best part of the night'

Adam Sandler moved fans to tears on Sunday evening when he performed his very own tribute to Saturday Night Live at the show's 50th Anniversary Special. Taking to the stage with his acoustic guitar and wearing a black tuxedo, the 58-year-old actor sang a song about the original cast members of the NBC program - and gave a shoutout to various people. As part of the lyrics, Sandler sang: 'But we all know that the first cast was the best,' as he mentioned the likes of Dennis Miller, Billy Crystal, and SNL creator Lorne Michaels.

At one point, the father-of-two sang: 'Six years of our boy Farley, five of our buddy Norm,' referring to comedians and former SNL cast members Chris Farley and Norm Macdonald, who are both sadly no longer alive. Sandler paused after mentioned Farley, who died in 1997 at the age of 33, and appeared to be fighting back tears before he continued with his performance. When a clip was posted on Instagram, fans were quick to share their thoughts and praised the Big Daddy actor for such a 'moving' tribute.

Meanwhile, Macdonald died from complications from acute leukemia on September 14, 2021, at the age of 61. Both Farley and Macdonald worked on SNL in the nineties, with the latter hired as a writer and cast member in 1993. Macdonald spent a total of five seasons on the series, which included anchoring the show's Weekend Update segment for three and a half seasons. He was removed as host of SNL's Weekend Update in 1998, allegedly for relentlessly mocking O. J. Simpson during his murder trial, offending producer Don Ohlmeyer, who was a close friend of Simpson.

Along with Chris Rock, Farley was one of the new Saturday Night Live cast members announced in early 1990. Norm Macdonald and Adam during SNL's Weekend Update on September 24, 1994. He frequently collaborated with fellow cast members Rock, Sandler, Tim Meadows, Rob Schneider and David Spade - and the group came to be known as the 'Bad Boys of SNL.'.
