In a major setback for holidaymakers, Ryanair is set to discontinue flights across destinations in Italy, France, Spain, Austria and Denmark. The company is reportedly eliminating several routes because of new taxes or surcharges that it must pay. Here is a breakdown on each country and what to expect. Ryanair will no longer operate an aircraft from Fiumicino, the biggest airport in the nation, that is situated in Rome from summer 2025. It will also stop recording any traffic growth at the city’s other airport, Ciampino.

“This means no growth for Rome despite the celebrations for the jubilee year,” the airline explained in a statement, pointing to the announcement of municipal levies in the major Italian airports that would take effect on April 1, 2025. “The stifling of connectivity and tourism in Rome is in stark contrast to other major European capitals, such as Brussels, London and Paris, where airports operate without restrictive limits on flights,” the airline said.

There has been an 18 per cent decrease in summer 2025 traffic for the low-cost carrier in Spain, which translates to the loss of 800,000 seats and 12 routes. Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson said in a statement: “Excessive airport charges and lack of workable growth incentives continue to undermine Spain's regional airports, limiting their growth and leaving vast swathes of airport's capacity underutilised.”.

Following the implementation of a new aviation tax in Denmark earlier this month, Ryanair declared it would close its Billund base and cease operations in Aalborg. The aviation tax in France is also expected to more than double by 2025. Austria is also facing trouble due to its €12 air traffic charge. The airline has changed its strategy in Austria to give preference to airports with cheaper fees, such as Linz and Salzburg.
