Amazon Prime Video quietly adds ‘forgotten’ teen drama compared to The OC

Amazon Prime Video viewers have been unearthing a 00s teen drama that has been lost to the archives. The streaming platform has recently added The CW’s show Hidden Palms which has been compared to The OC. Like The OC, the TV show follows the lives of a group of teenagers and their families in California – but this time in Palm Springs.

It starred A-listers including Amber Heard as Greta Matthews and Tessa Thompson as Nikki Barnes. On Reddit, 356CeeGuy commented: ‘Hidden Palms is now streaming on Prime in good quality; more interesting today nostalgically as a weird OC spinoff meets Desperate Housewives moved to Palm Springs.’.

Echoing their sentiment, Effective-Insect4249 shared: ‘It is like the bad guy from the OC becomes Ryan in a different TV show in a way. And also how it’s set in Palm Springs and that’s where the golf episode was in The OC. ‘I get totally different premise and stuff but just some of the parallels on character types struck me, even back then Also Michael Cassidy (zack from the OC) was also in this show.’.

BulldogMSC wrote: ‘I thought this was a good show with a great first few episodes…. I always wondered why it didn’t get to finish out the season (just like freaks and geeks) it was too good to cancel so soon.’. Findingmyvoice22 added: ‘This is one of my favourite shows ever. I watched it when it first aired (and recorded the episodes on VHS to rewatch later…gosh, I feel ancient writing that) and immediately loved the show. It’s one that I have rewatched many times over the years!’.

Hidden Palms originally ran for one eight-episode season on US network The CW in 2007 before it was cancelled. At the time, it received mixed reviews with the likes of Linda Stasi of the New York Post calling it ‘the best rich kid show to appear on TV since that other California show died’, while Mike Duffy of the Detroit Free Press said it was ‘luridly derivative.’.

Hidden Palms is not the only series on Amazon Prime Video that has been likened to a classic TV show fans have been binge-watching. They’ve also been devouring Australian true crime drama series which was hailed as ‘Australia’s answer to The Sopranos’ when it aired in 2008.

Each season of Underbelly is inspired by real-life events, with the first loosely based on the 1995 to 2004 gangland war in Melbourne. During this time, 36 underworld figures were killed, causing a power vacuum within the city’s criminal community. Discussing the 00s drama on Reddit, FooteHarry said: ‘Australian show Underbelly about real gangland wars in Melbourne is (pardon the pun) criminally underrated and should be seen by an international audience.

‘Australia has always punched above its weight in terms of crime dramas both cinematically and televised, but after re-watching Underbelly (season 1, the others weren’t so good) there is a strong case to be made that we do it better than anyone else with a massively underfunded media industry.’.

Over on Google, Principe Raphael described Underbelly as ‘must-watch’ TV. They wrote: ‘Some of the storylines are inconsistent, but the acting, atmosphere and pace make this a must-watch. Unlike US cop shows, this is so direct and to the point without resorting to pontificating with too many messages or glamorizing the police.’.
