An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi was diverted to land in Rome due to security threat. Flight 292 was accompanied by a fighter jet escort after it performed a U-turn over the Black Sea. While American Airlines did not specify the cause of the ‘possible security issue’, ABC News reported a bomb threat had been received by email.

Following the plane’s arrival at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, it was inspected by law enforcement before being cleared to depart again. The concern proved to be ‘non-credible’, the airline said. There were 199 passengers on board the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, as well as 15 crew members.

American Airlines said: ‘The flight will stay in Rome overnight to allow for required crew rest before continuing to Delhi as soon as possible tomorrow.’. Earlier this month, another flight from the same airline was delayed when someone on board named a WiFi hotspot ‘There is a bomb on the flight’.

Flight 2863 was preparing to depart Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas when a man showed a flight attendant something on his tablet, according to passenger Bruce Steen, 63. The flight attendant informed the cockpit and the pilot announced that the airplane would be going back to the gate because of an ‘administrative issue’, Steen told ABC News.

Minutes later, the pilot said that ‘somebody renamed their hotspot’, Steen said, and the crew revealed it was the ill-advised phrase. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
