Arne Slot believes one of the secrets of success at Liverpool this season might be a good night’s sleep. The Reds boss was asked about the changes made to pre-match habits. Before home games under Jurgen Klopp, the players would stay at a hotel in Liverpool. Obviously when they play away they still travel a day before and stay in hotels in the city or town they’re playing in the next day. But Slot is now eager for players to stay at home in their own houses before games at Anfield and the reason is it helps their sleep. He said: “I can’t compare with how it is. People tell me - and people tell me who know better - that you always sleep better in your own bed than a hotel bed.
“Sleep is a very important part of getting the best possible performance. It is not only the argument that they are at home with their families but also that they are better prepared for a game. If you use common sense you know you sleep better in your own bed than a hotel bed.”. Liverpool have lost just one game at home all season so far so maybe it is working. They do face a long trip this weekend though. The Reds take on Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round as they look to keep their quadruple quest alive.
The Premier League table toppers and Champions League last 16 entrants won their way to a Carabao Cup final by thrashing toothless Tottenham on Thursday night. They now face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16 which means their league game with Aston Villa scheduled for that weekend has been shifted to February 19. That means the two weeks Liverpool got free by skipping the Champions League play-off round now have league games as they also face Everton on February 12 in a rearranged Merseyside derby. But Slot is not concerned about fixture congestion as the games come thick and fast.
He said: “We want to be competing for every trophy, we want to be in every competition so we must not complain about the amount of games we have to play. “I don’t see an advantage or disadvantage. We play Sunday, Wednesday, Sunday and Aston Villa will probably do the same.”. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
