Aubrey Plaza’s fans couldn’t hide their emotions as they noticed a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband. The 40-year-old actress appeared on Saturday Night Live this weekend for its 50th anniversary, in her first public appearance since the the death of her husband on January 2. Jeff Baena died aged just 47, and Aubrey appeared to give his memory a nod while making her return to TV. Fans noticed that the star wore a white tee with an orange tie dye print beneath her black suit, and quickly connected the fashion choice to Jeff.
Back in December 2021 during an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Aubrey revealed: “We were in the lockdown. Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day.”. Aubrey also shared how important tie dye was to her relationship while on The Drew Barrymore Show the same year. “We got married on a whim. Literally decided at around 5pm and got married at 8:30. Jeff got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine. So, I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pajamas that he had made for us,” she said.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, fans pointed out the connection and admitted they were in tears over Audrey’s subtle tribute to Jeff. “Aubrey wearing a tie dyed shirt... if i wasn't crying already,” one person wrote, with a second saying: “Her way of carrying love and memory is so powerful.”. “The tie-dye shirt is iconic, but Aubrey’s energy is what’s really making me cry,” a third shared, with another adding: “This is so heartwarming and indeed she's a strong woman.”.
“I literally can't imagine what it must be like. I try to think about the reality of your Forever Person being gone and it just aches too much to keep trying. To have to wake up each day after that? And knowing he's gone because he was hurting so bad? My heart goes out to her,” another viewer said, while a sixth person admitted: “Brb sobbing playing death and having this happen is one of fate's possibly cruelest jokes.”.
While speaking to Ellen about her Covid-19 wedding, Aubrey gave away more details alongside sharing information about their tie dye outfits. “A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal,” she revealed, jokingly explaining: “We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up.”. She also described her marriage to Drew Barrymore, saying: "It's so great, it's so complicated. It's, like, extreme highs and extreme, you know, complications. It's a really hard thing to navigate, but we've been together for 11 years. We just muscle our way through it.".
