The drawing shows a naked man reclining on what seems to be a pile of patterned cushions, with his hands resting behind his head. Upon the unexpected revelation, Hull was overwhelmed with emotion, appearing lost for words when he learned the artwork was created in the '80s, before he was born.
'Oh my God, I feel... This is such a weird feeling to have,' the Aussie comedian said in his Instagram video. 'So I'm in an antique store, just going about my business and I saw this artwork here and I thought, oh it looks like something my aunt does. She doesn't live anywhere near here and she has no connection to Brisbane whatsoever.
'I looked down in the corner and I'm like, "Holy f***, my aunt painted this".'. Hull broke down in tears as he muttered to himself that he had to buy the artwork. Christian Hull was casually browsing through an antique shop when he randomly stumbled across a $200 painting that left him in tears.
'How much is it going for? It's 200 bucks. I can't even tell you how crazy this is,' he said as he checked the price tag. 'What year was it painted? She probably did this before I was born. This is f***ing insane. Oh my God, I can't wait to text the family group chat. That's crazy.
'I just need you to know how insane this is. I was just perusing the antique centre, looking for macramé pot hangers and oh my God... My heart is racing.'. The former radio producer couldn't help but wonder how the artwork made its way to Brisbane, given that his aunt had lived in Sydney her whole life, carving out a career as a children's author and illustrator.
'How the f*** did this get here? Who bought it? I need to know where this came from,' Hull questioned. In a follow-up clip, Hull filmed himself proudly holding the new piece of art in his home, confirming that he had learned more details about the framed painting.
'I just got off the phone with my aunt. It turns out that this is a guy named Andrew and it's her secret lover. Isn't that scandalous?' Hull cheekily said. However, he quickly quashed his statement, saying 'I wish that was the case.'. Hull is now the proud owner of his aunt's artwork after buying it from an antique shop for $200.
'I said, "Helen, please tell me I uncovered a deep family secret" and she was like, "No, I'm so sorry, I'm so boring",' Hull explained. Getting to the bottom of the artwork, his aunt explained that she had painted it in the 1980s during a life drawing class.
'The model's name was apparently Andrew,' Hull said. The painting was still in its original grey frame, his aunt pointed out. The biggest question on their minds was, 'How did it get here?'. 'What a weird, random coincidence,' Hull said. His aunt has no idea how the painting ended up at an antique shop in Brisbane, but Hull was just excited he now owns the risque piece in his home.
'And now I've got it and now I'm putting it on my wall. I love this,' he said. 'This was such a surreal moment. I'm so excited to own an artwork that I saw, loved instantly and then realised my aunt had drawn it back in the 80s, in Sydney before I was born.
