Barcelona 'make their first summer signing' as German free agent 'snubs Bayern Munich' to reunite with Hansi Flick

A Germany international star has reportedly agreed to a free move to Spanish giants Barcelona in the summer of 2025. The 29-year-old player - whose contract expires on June 30th - is eager to transition to the Catalans to reunite with his former boss Hansi Flick. The centre back had previous contacts with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, who were keen to reinforce their defensive line with an experienced star, but the player has opted for Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Jonathan Tah has expressed his desire to wear the Blaugrana shirt as he awaits his forthcoming meeting with the club's officials to complete the signing. Meanwhile, Barcelona find the transfer attractive due to the centre back's expiring contract at the end of this term amid their ongoing financial issues. It is understood that Blaugrana's board took advantage of their visit to Germany for the Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund in December, to meet and agree with the player's environment, even though according to FIFA regulations, they are allowed to negotiate with free agents after January 1st.

Barcelona have reportedly agreed terms with Bayer Leverkusen's star Jonathan Tah over a move in the summer transfer window. The German international is understood to be a Blaugrana's fan since his childhood. The 29-year-old player is set to reunited with his former Germany manager Hansi Flick. According to the Spanish outlet's report, Tah accepted a fee significantly lower than he could have had in Bayern Munich due to the fact that he has been a Barcelona fan since childhood.

Despite his age and a free transfer, the player could sign a five-year contract, although the agreements are still in oral form. However, Barcelona would have to regulate their squad ahead of the German's arrival, who could become their sixth centre back, without considering Jules Kounde, who is regularly seen on the right flank of the pitch. The news emerged just weeks after Ronald Araujo signed a new contract with the Spanish giants, despite previous reports that he was keen on a transfer abroad.

Arsenal and Juventus were among the sides highly interested in the Uruguay international, with the Italian offering a fee as high as £35million. Despite a financial crisis, Barcelona rejected it and ultimately agreed on a new deal with Araujo, who is understood to have a noticeably lower release clause than his previous contract. In this scenario, former Premier League star Andreas Christensen could see his exit after making only one appearance during this campaign.

The Denmark international was a key player under former manager Xavi, who often placed him on the defensive midfielder position due to his discipline and passing abilities. Despite a more attractive offer from Bayern Munich, the player still accepted the terms proposed by Barcelona. However, the Catalans will first need to balance their team as they currently have five centre backs in the squad. Should they complete the transfer, former Chelsea star Andreas Christensen could see his departure from Barcelona.

However, at the start on the current season after just one LaLiga game, Christensen endured an achilles injury to leave him on the sideline for more than 100 days. The player was already on the verge of leaving Barcelona in the recent winter transfer window, as well as another centre back Eric Garcia. The former Manchester City player was able to regain Flick's confidence, regularly appearing on the pitch in 2025, including the 7-1 clash against Valencia in January.
