In November, movie musical Wicked broke records as it became the highest-grossing movie based on a broadway musical ever. Grossing a staggering $723.2 million so far, Wicked surpassed previous title-holder Mamma Mia!, which grossed $611.5 million, and also knocked another iconic musical out of its top three spot. Les Miserables is now in third place with $442.8 million, while 1970s classic film Grease has been sent to fourth place with just $396.3 million.
However, it seems Netflix is giving a whole new generation of musical lovers a chance to fall in love with Grease all over again, as the movie will soon be added to the platform. Fans of the iconic flick, which stars John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John as couple Danny and Sandy, will be delighted to know it is coming to Netflix on February 19. Grease first opened on Broadway in 1972, later coming to the big screen in 1978 with director Randal Kleiser at the helm.
The musical romantic comedy follows ‘good girl’ Sandy Olsson and rebel Danny Zuko, who fall in love over the summer. When they unexpectedly discover that they now attend the same high school after Sandy’s parents move to Danny’s town, the teens must navigate their romance in a totally different setting. Meanwhile, 2024 film Wicked is up for 10 Oscar nominations, including nods for both of its main stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, last year’s Wicked is part one of two movies, which expand on the first and second acts of the original 2003 Broadway musical. A plot synopsis from IMDb reads: “Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman because of her green skin, and Galinda, a popular girl, become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads.”.
