Spain and the Canary Islands have traditionally been the preferred destinations for those seeking winter sun, boasting a combination of warm weather and family-friendly resorts. However, increasing prices are causing budget-conscious travellers to explore other options, with North Africa emerging as a favoured alternative, says travel giant TUI.
Sebastien Ebel, CEO of TUI Group, has observed a noticeable change in the travel patterns of British holidaymakers. He said: "What we see is more people going to Egypt in winter [instead of the Canaries].". For tourists mindful of their spending, affordability is crucial, and Ebel points out a growing group of travellers operating within a limited budget. "We also see quite often new customers who have less income but still want to travel, and they have a budget of €1,000/£800 per vacation. If they don't see it in Spain, then they look for alternatives, and they find alternatives," he said.
With escalating costs, capacity issues and protests against mass tourism in Spain, locations like Egypt and Tunisia are becoming appealing for those wanting to save on winter sun holidays. "There is a shift, especially in the family segment, to cheaper destinations," added Ebel. EasyJet Holidays has also seen an increase in demand for less frequented locations, including Egypt and Morocco.
