Casemiro says he is enjoying life at Manchester United and wants to stay at the club until the end of his contract in 2026. The Brazilian has been at Old Trafford since his surprise move from Real Madrid in 2022 and things have not gone that well since his arrival. The midfielder actually had a very good first season under Erik ten Hag, making 51 appearances in all competitions and scoring seven goals, but he has become something of a lightning rod for criticism since then.

Injuries have not helped and at 32 years old he looks to have lost the legs required to compete in the middle of the park in the Premier League. The Brazil international has fallen down the pecking order as a result, making just 11 Premier League starts this season, although he was back in the starting XI on Sunday due to injuries and illness as United lost at Tottenham. Speaking about his future with the Red Devils, Casemiro said he intends to keep working hard to get back into the first team and wants to remain with the club next season.

That may be of some concern to the United hierarchy as they are keen to get his enormous £350,000-a-week wages off their books as they look to rebuild under Ruben Amorim. ‘I have to keep doing what I’m doing, with a lot of respect and education,’ the midfielder told AS. ‘Of course I’d like to play more. I don’t know any player who doesn’t want to play and help. ‘Also, I’d like to help the club at this time. I approach things with respect for my teammates and the technical committee. And above all, I respect United, a club to which I’m very grateful.

‘I have a year-and-a-half left on my contract and I’d like to fulfil it here in Manchester. I’m comfortable here and so is my family. They’ve adapted, we speak English. ‘I’m very grateful to the Old Trafford fans and to the club. I’m happy at club level. Happy in the dugout? Of course not. That’s another thing.’. A loan exit to Roma in January was touted for the midfielder, but nothing came of it while the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony did depart on short-term deals.

Casemiro got a chance to impress against Spurs as the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount were all unavailable. It was a tough match for the veteran, with Amorim’s tactical set-up not really helping him as he was left exposed in the middle of the pitch as Bruno Fernandes was asked to drift wide to the right. With the Red Devils captain departed from the centre of the pitch and the pair of Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee behind striker Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro was regularly left largely along to patrol the midfield, which is a huge ask of him.

Defeat to Tottenham left the Red Devils 15th in the Premier League table with just eight wins from 25 league games, in which they have scored 28 goals. Amorim is seriously struggling to improve the levels of performance and get results out of his side, admitting that he is finding the job very hard. ‘I have a lot of problems,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘My job is so hard but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs and I will try to win again.’.

Next up for Amorim and his team is a trip to in-form Everton on Saturday in the Premier League after the Toffees overtook the Red Devils in the table over the weekend.
