The age-old culinary conundrum of whether to salt your pasta water has been a hot topic for years. Cooking pasta might seem straightforward - boil water, toss in the pasta, and cook for about 10 minutes -but achieving delectable pasta perfection is subject to debate. One of the biggest debates foodies have is whether to add salt to the boiling water.
Supporters of salting argue that it enhances the pasta's flavour as it absorbs the salty water during cooking. Naysayers counter that if the pasta is slathered in sauce, additional salting is unnecessary. Now, one chef has taken it upon himself to end this culinary dispute once and for all by comparing pasta cooked in salted and unsalted water.
Chef Mattia Moleri shared his experiment on TikTok, revealing that he was prompted by a comment on a previous video to put the pasta water debate to the ultimate test. He declared: "There's a debate on the internet about whether or not to salt your pasta water, so let's find out once and for all.".
The chef created the video as part of his Food Myths series, where he tests various cooking techniques and kitchen hacks. He said filming the pasta water clip was "easy" as he only had to cook two batches of pasta - one with salt in the water and one without.
While his pasta was boiling, Mattia debunked the common myth that the water should have so much salt that it "tastes like the ocean", as he said this was "way too salty". He clarified that the correct ratio should be 10g of salt for every litre of water used.
