Mainoo had emerged as one of the most important names on the Man United teamsheet in the latter stages of Erik ten Hag's reign at the club after coming through the ranks. The youngster even broke through to the England squad, and featured heavily for Gareth Southgate's side at the European Championship over the summer of 2024.

Mainoo even earned his spot on the Golden Boy shortlist, an award given to youth players in Europe's top leagues who have exceeded on the biggest stages despite their ages. The 19-year-old suffered an injury earlier this season and had seen his minutes managed by head coach Ruben Amorim, before turning in a stellar performance on Sunday in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
