Coronation Street fans have slammed bosses’ decision to give returnee Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh) terminal cancer. The beloved character staged a return to Weatherfield at the end of last week after it was confirmed actress Katy Cavanagh would reprise her role as part of on-screen sister Eileen Grimshaw’s (Sue Cleaver) exit storyline.

On Monday’s episode of the ITV soap, fans saw her forced to reveal to nephew Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) that she has been diagnosed with cancer. Many disgruntled fans blasted the soap for introducing another illness storyline. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video.

Up Next. Taking to X, one wrote: ‘I can not underestimate how angry I am that that is the direction they’ve decided to go in with Julie’s return. All enthusiasm I had last week towards her coming back has now gone. The third f***ing cancer storyline in 12 months.

‘Why would anyone want, let alone, write this.’. Another said: ‘Hi @itvcorrie bosses! Nobody wants to lose Debbie to dementia, also we don’t want you to bring a fantastic character like Julie back only to give her cancer! Stop with the continuous issue based storylines! Nobody wants them!’.

A third agreed: ‘Why bring back the sunshine that is Julie Carp, just to give her cancer? The show is in desperate need of lighthearted content to balance the continual doom and gloom.’. ‘So Julie is back because she’s terminally ill!! Of course she is.. it’s @itvcorrie and they only do misery. I’m really close to leaving it behind,’ one angry fan said.

Another posted: ‘So they brought Julie back to kill her off with terminal cancer…….this programme is just continuous misery.’. Julie first hit our screens in 2008 and remained a prominent figure on the cobbles until her exit in 2015. She was last seen heading off for pastures new with boyfriend Brian Packham (Peter Gunn), only for him to return to the street when they later broke up.

Speaking about her return to the soap, Katy previously said: ‘It is exciting to dust off Julie’s quirky wardrobe again and an absolute joy to step back onto the cobbles. Julie is so much fun, I’ve missed her.’. Producer Kate Brooks also teased how Julie’s return would have ‘huge ramifications for Eileen’.

Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen, announced she’d quit the ITV soap after 25 years last month, with her departure set to play out in the coming weeks. Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 or stream first from 7am on ITVX.
