An ‘easy to love’ romantic comedy praised for its hot chemistry and ‘refreshing’ nature is set to leave Amazon Prime Video ahead of Valentine’s Day. The Hating Game, a popular 2021 movie based on author Sally Thorne’s best-selling novel of the same name, has been described as ‘like The Duff, The Proposal and 50 Shades had a baby’ according to one fan. In a classic battle of the sexes set-up, the film follows ambitious good girl Lucy Hutton (Lucy Hale, Pretty Little Liars) and her cold, efficient work nemesis, Joshua Templeton (Austin Stowell, Whiplash), as they struggle to work together at a publishing company.

Resolving to achieve professional success without compromising her ethics, Lucy embarks on a ruthless game of one-upmanship against Joshua, a rivalry that is increasingly complicated by her growing attraction towards him. However, The Hating Game only has a matter of days left on Prime Video, with the movie set to leave the streaming platform in the early hours of Tuesday morning, UK time. Fans have shared their love for this rom-com, which was first released digitally in the UK in 2022 and classified as fresh both my critics and audience members on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

Leah K called it ‘a rare find’: ‘Upbeat. Pacey. Sexy. Insightful. Romantic comedy at its best,’ she added. ‘One of the best romantic comedy [sic] I have ever watched,’ agreed Mish M, while Diana L enthused: ‘So happy to watch an A level rom-com!’. Dana G went further, insisting: ‘It’s a HOT romcom that’s actually for adults. How was this so underrated? I’ve seen every romcom under the sun and the problem with all of them? They are silly and immature.’.

She praised The Hating Game as ‘SO refreshing’. ‘Sure it still followed a formula, but it was REALLY well played…. This movie is like The Duff, The Proposal and 50 Shades had a baby. One misstep and this could have been cheesy, but it was so well done.’. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video. Up Next.

Many fans also picked up on Hale and Stowell’s chemistry, with Sara B praising it as ‘sizzling’. Some critics agreed as well, with Marvelous Geeks Media observing: ‘If you’re a fan of romantic comedies, then The Hating Game is easy to love.’. ‘For viewers coming to The Hating Game with an open mind and a desire to see two hot people flirt, the film is easily the best romantic comedy of the year,’ read The Pop Break’s review.

‘While it’s predictable, this peppy works as a rom-com thanks to the sparks that fly between the two leads, played with coy sexiness by Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell,’ San Jose Mercury News’s review added. Not everyone has been quite as enamoured with it though, with Decider’s more in-the-middle review deciding: ‘The Hating Game is uneven, the rom edging out the com for better or worse. But its two leads offer enough allure to merit a watch.’.

However, The Guardian stated: ‘About as bland and as easily consumed as a cone of soft-serve ice-cream on a hot day.’. Luckily, fans of the film will not be left bereft for long – if they subscribe to Netflix. For The Hating Game is making its way over there to be added to the streaming platform in the UK from February 11. Other films soon to leave Amazon Prime Video include No Strings Attached, When Harry Met Sally, About Time and The Notebook.

Cineworld is going all out for the release of Wicked, and we couldn’t be more excited. The Hating Game is streaming on Amazon Prime Video until February 11, when it moves to Netflix in the UK.
