Manchester United produced an impressive comeback before surviving a dramatic finale to rescue a 2-2 draw at Everton in the Premier League. The Toffees continued their impressive form under David Moyes as goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure saw the hosts race into a two-goal lead at half-time.

But United fought back after the break as Bruno Fernandes’ free kick and Manuel Ugarte’s volley brought Ruben Amorim’s side level. Everton thought they had a chance to snatch a dramatic win at the death when Ashley Young appeared to be fouled inside the area but much to their frustration, the hosts saw the penalty controversially overturned after a VAR check.

‘I think it was a soft touch from what I saw. I think it was a soft penalty, it was clear. We need to win three points and we need to win the whole game. ‘The worst part is that we are losing the ball without pressure and we are not doing what we need to do. We were soft.
‘In training, we have to continue to do the same. In the second half, we changed nothing. We have to do the same thing but in a good way. Explaining the decision, the Premier League said: ‘VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. ‘The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.’.

There looked to be a clear tug from Maguire on Young’s shirt but the referee is ushered over to the monitor to review his decision and decides not to give a penalty. 90+3 mins: PENALTY!. Drama at Goodison Park and Everton have a chance to win it at the death. Young tries to latch onto Onana’s parry but he’s bundled to the ground by a combination of Maguire and De Ligt and the referee points to the sport.
VAR will have a look…. 90 mins: A tame, tame effort from Zirkzee as he rolls the ball straight at Pickford from a tight angle. 89 mins: SAVE! And that so nearly was the winner! A wonderful effort from Fernandes on the edge of the box but Pickford does superbly to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.
88 mins: CHANCE! Everton now with a great chance to go back ahead but Beto’s header is straight at Onana from close range. It feels like there’s a winner in this game…. 81 mins: A double change for Everton now as Iroegbunam and Alcaraz come on for Doucoure and Garner.
Out of nowhere United are level!. The ball drops invitingly at the feet of Ugarte and the midfielder takes a lovely touch before volleying his effort through a crowded penalty area and past Pickford in the Everton goal. The visitors improved markedly since that Fernandes free-kick and now they have their second.
78 mins: Maguire goes down rather softly inside the box but the referee is having none of it and waves away the appeals. A lifeline for United!. Pickford is wrong-footed from the set piece and Fernandes fires the effort into the bottom-right corner. Out of nowhere, United have a goal back. Can they grab another?.
70 mins: A free-kick opportunity in a good area for United after Garnacho is bundled to the ground. Before that, United make a double switch as Mazraoui and Hojlund make way for Yoro and Chido. 66 mins: SAVE! O’Brien whips it in from the right and Doucoure catches it nicely but his effort is parried away well by Onana.
62 mins: United make their first change of the game as they hunt a way back into this game. It’s Casemiro who comes off as Garnacho is thrown on. 59 mins: Onana is charged down and, under pressure, kicks it straight out for a throw-in. Moyes’ side have not stopped harrying their opposition for one minute this match.
57 mins: A couple of great crosses from Mykolenko and Young give United something to deal with the trio of centre-backs are able to deal with the threat and clear their lines. 53 mins: And now Everton can make that change as Lindstrom makes way for the former United player.
