When you think of the ultimate comfort meal, there are numerous British dishes that might spring to mind – from stews and hot pots, to dumplings, mash and sticky toffee pudding. But you can’t beat the comforting simplicity of a jacket potato, and it’s something one fast food chain in the UK knows only too well, as it’s adding the humble baked spud to the menu.

Subway has announced it’s trialling a brand new range of hot, fluffy jacket potatoes in 170 of its restaurants as of February 19, following the ‘jacket potato renaissance’ on social media. With a brand new ‘Spudway’ selection on the menu, customers will be able to pick from fillings like the classic Heinz Beanz and Cheese and Tuna Mayonnaise, or Subway fan-favourites such as Chicken Tikka, Taco Beef, or Rotisserie Style Chicken and Bacon.

But the options won’t be limited to just these flavours, as any Sub can be turned into a spud, so people will be able to get creative and add whatever toppings they fancy. The jacket potatoes can be enjoyed on their own, or as part of a new meal deal which will include a spud and drink, plus a packet of crisps or a cookie. The price of the deal hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, but Subway says individual spuds will start from £4.29 (although this will vary by store).

Spudway will be available until April 15 while stocks last, and if the trial proves successful there’s potential for Spudway to be rolled out nationwide later this year. Speaking about the launch, Deniz Safa, director of innovation and culinary at Subway EMEA, said: ‘We’re always looking to bring our fans delicious and customisable options that suit every taste and every budget. Made with British potatoes, salted butter and a double portion of cheese, plus any of our many toppings, Spudway is the perfect freshly-made, high-quality lunch choice.

‘With jacket potatoes surging in popularity – thanks to their comforting, filling nature and great value – now is the ideal time for Subway to trial this exciting addition to our menu. Given the recent buzz on social media and growing consumer demand, we’re eager to see how Spudway is received, and if our guests love it, this could be just the beginning!’.

The full list of participating Spudway locations can be found here. While many will likely be excited by the news, Subway isn’t the first fast food chain in the UK to offer jacket potatoes. Wendy’s also has the humble spud on its menu, with five different options to choose from. There’s the Plain Potato, the Cheese Baked Potato which features a creamy cheese sauce and shredded cheese, the Chilli Cheese Baked Potato which has everything from the cheese one but with added chilli on top, Sour Cream and Chives Potato (does what it says on the tin) and the Bacon and Cheese Potato with cheese sauce, shredded cheese and Applewood smoked bacon.

The chain also recently added a few other new items to its menu here, including one that would likely please McDonald’s fans. Fans can now get their hands on Halloumi Fries (£2.99 for three pieces), which are described as being ‘crispy and golden on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside’.

And if that weren’t enough, customers can aso order Mini Doughnuts (£1.99 for six), dusted in sugar and cinnamon. Do you have a story to share?. Get in touch by emailing MetroLifestyleTeam@Metro.co.uk. Arrow MORE: Fried chicken chain roasted for moving headquarters out of its namesake state.
