Footy great Joel Selwood shares tribute to brother Troy after death that rocked AFL community

Former Geelong AFL star Joel Selwood has shared a heartbreaking tribute to his brother Troy who sadly died this week. The sudden death on Tuesday of the 40-year-old father-of-two sent shockwaves through the AFL community, which the Selwood family is so closely tied to. Troy, a midfielder, played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions between 2003 and 2010. He had a twin brother, Adam, who played for West Coast, while Joel and another brother, Scott, played for the Cats.

The family confirmed the death on Tuesday but remain silent until Saturday, when the boys' mother broke her silence by sharing funeral details. Joel then took to Instagram on Saturday night to share photos of the pair. 'Rest away brother, love you,' he wrote. The funeral will be held next Friday at Geelong's GMHBA stadium. While Troy never played in the AFL for Geelong, after he retired from the top level in 2010 he captained their VFL side to a premiership and worked for the club in a number of off-field positions.

Craig Lambert, who worked in Brisbane's player welfare department during Selwood's playing stint at the club, said Selwood's passing was 'absolutely devastating news'. Selwood's body was found at a Geelong home on Tuesday morning after the 40-year-old battled mental health issues in recent years. Selwood, the number 19 pick in the 2002 national draft. Excelling in talent identification, Selwood worked at Geelong between 2011 and 2021 before a brief stint at Collingwood.
