Hydrangeas, with their variety of shapes from circular balls to stunning cones, are hardy plants that can withstand the winter chill and even a freeze. Despite this resilience, the cold season often strips them of their blooms, leaving any remaining foliage dry and brown. So, what's the secret to keeping these beauties thriving through the frost?.

Ben Hayman, Hoselink's gardening expert, reveals in a TikTok video that a good prune can lead to "spectacular blooms" and a "healthier" growth during the growing season. On Hoselink's TikTok, Ben demonstrates how to properly prune hydrangea paniculata, a fan favourite among the species.

He begins: "Today I'm going to show you how to prune and get masses of flowers on your panicle hydrangeas, or as you may know them, hydrangea paniculata.". He adds: "These are the ones with the big cone-like flowers that look just as stunning in the garden as they do in any flower arrangement.".

Ben advises that the best time for pruning is "We prune these guys in winter to early spring - and they're really easy to prune they flower on the coming year's growth.". He suggests starting by removing any dead, damaged, or diseased parts, then cutting back to a solid framework, followed by thinning out crowded areas to let light and air circulate at the heart of the plant, reports the Express.
