GB News interrupted its regular programming to bring viewers a live update from the farmers' protest, where Nigel Farage made a surprise appearance. Presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello cut to a breaking news feed as Nigel joined the show to express his outrage at the Labour government's latest tax plans. The government's announcement that it will introduce a £1m cap on tax-free inheritance from April 2026, with anything above taxed at 20%, has sparked widespread anger among farmers.
Nigel has joined the "rural revolt" against the tax hikes, which farmers fear could force them to sell their farms. Speaking to the presenters, the MP said: "The reality is getting through that whilst farms with their buildings and lands may have a relatively high asset value, their incomes are pretty pitiful.". He added: "Many farming families are pretty much on minimum wage or less, these are not rich people, these are hard working people.".
The Reform Leader's comments come after he exclusively told the Daily Express that Labour's decision is "nothing short of a betrayal against our agricultural industry and rural communities". He warned that Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves ' "relentless" assault on rural communities will have devastating consequences, reports the Express. Nigel furiously declared that if these farmers do sell, they "would get some money, but they would lose their way of life".
The British politician continued: "This is about more than where they live, this is about a complete culture and way of life. Somehow the Treasury and government seem to has lost complete connection with where food comes from and the English countryside. I have to say, Westminster is so out of touch.". In a separate chat with LBC the member of parliament further explained: "We're seeing farmers' protests now all over the country, it's very important they keep the pressure up, it's very important they're voluble.".
During his appearance on Nick Ferrari at Breakfast, he said: "I think the public are increasingly getting behind them but I emphasised to them this morning, please stay peaceful. "Don't do what our neighbours do on the other side of the English Channel where they block the roads and set fires to things, that I think would turn the British public against them.". Breakfast with Eamonn and Ellie is on GB News every weekday from 6am to 9.30am. GB News is available on Freeview, YouView, Freesat, Sky, and Virgin Media.
