Audrey Daumain was in the passenger seat of her Audi 4x4 when her mother, who was driving them home, suffered what Audrey now knows was an epileptic fit. As her Mum's leg went rigid, pushing her foot down on the accelerator, the car reached 81mph. Audrey pleaded with her mother to 'slow down' before realising with sheer horror that she was unable to respond.

Fearing they were about to smash into the line of vehicles ahead of them, Audrey made a split-second decision that would change her life for ever. As they came within inches of the car in front, Audrey grabbed the wheel and pulled the Audi, which was still going at full pelt, off the road.

They ploughed through the steel barrier and into trees before finally coming to a halt in a ditch. Somehow Audrey survived the terrible crash, but tragically her mother, who was 62, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is truly the stuff of nightmares. And what followed for mother-of-two Audrey was like entering a terrifying parallel universe.
Audrey Daumain became the subject of an 18-month police investigation after the tragic accident. 'The action I took seemed like the only viable thing to do in that moment, but still I felt profound guilt,' says Audrey, 47, shaking her head in disbelief at the memory. 'If I had done something different, though I can't imagine what, my mother might be alive.
