A same-sex couple with a 32-year age gap have hit back at trolls who say they look like a 'grandma' and 'granddaughter' when they kiss in public. Heather McGreachy-Irwin, 36, had been married to a man for seven years when she met her wife Sue, 68, on Twitter in 2020.

At the time, they lived 4,207 miles apart with a five hour time difference, with Sue based in Florida and Heather from Luton, Bedfordshire. Sue had also been married to a man for 35 years, but after bonding over Star Trek on social media, they soon realised their love transcended age, gender, and the huge distance between them.

After first meeting in November 2021 in person, the couple married in a small ceremony in Central Park in May 2023, with Sue moving to the UK later that summer. Now, the couple live together and are happily married, even recently attending Heather's ex-husband's wedding, as well as the Globe Theatre - where her ex proposed 12 years ago.

Sharing a picture of her and Sue on their wedding day, Heather took to TikTok to blast trolls accusing her of 'kissing her grandma', saying: 'Well, she's actually my wife. We have a 32 year age gap. And we are building a beautiful life together. 'We get a lot of hate but we are too busy loving each other to notice. We are just two souls who found each other and love each other, cherishing whatever time we have. This is our love story and our happily ever after.

'We see past age. We see past gender. We are just two people who found each other in this crazy world and love each other.'. Both women had only dated men previously and, two weeks after they first got talking, they jumped on a Zoom call and were chatting for 'hours'.

They weren't able to meet for 11 months due to Covid, but Sue flew to meet her for the first time in London in November 2021, for a first date that lasted a whole week. It was only after meeting in person that they realised they had a connection and they were gay.

Heather, a mental health nurse, said: 'Sue had booked to go to a Star Trek convention in London. 'She came for a week and the convention was at the end of that week. Sue is a photographer so I took her to places where we could get her some good pictures.

'We went to Buckingham Palace and all the typical sites.'. The next 20 months were spent living more than 4,000 miles apart, flying back and forth to spend time together. In October 2022, they decided to come out to their family and friends as gay. The couple says their relationship transcends 'age and gender' and they want to share it to normalise it.

They married in May 2023, with Sue moving to the UK from Florida later that year. Both women had only dated men previously and only realised they were gay after meeting in person. 'I was terrified of coming out to my daughter,' Sue says. 'But the day I told her I was gay, she looked at me and said 'mum I always knew you were'. It made me realise how it was time to make the changes in our lives to be out.'.

Heather, a mental health nurse, added: 'My family and friends had only ever known me dating men. 'I told my parents separately and I was a little more nervous about telling my dad. He said he'd suspected what was going on between me and Sue and asked why I didn't tell him sooner.'.

In December 2022 the couple went on holiday to New York and on the trip Sue proposed to Heather. 'We were on Summit One Vanderbilt, it is all glass and it was night time in the city - it was beautiful,' she recalls. The couple decided on a small ceremony in Central Park, in May 2023, with just two of their friends.

'We had spent so much time apart, we didn't want to worry about the logistics of getting people there and wanted the wedding to be just us. It was a great day,' Heather explained. Following their nuptials, in July 2023, Sue moved her life to the UK permanently. 'At the time Heather's daughter was only six and she was working as a mental health nurse, whereas I'd retired so the move would be a lot more difficult logistically for her than it was for me.'.

Sue, who used to live in the US, was previously married to a man for 35 years. On TikTok, they describe themselves as lesbians who met on Twitter and came out later in life. The couple say they aren't bothered by the age gap and haven't had any negative reactions from strangers, although they do say there have been occasions where Sue has been mistaken for Heather's mum and they have to explain that they are actually married.
