The music was loud and the crowd was boisterous. As I stepped onstage for karaoke, I heard the first few strums of Roxanne by The Police. It felt euphoric to sing a masculine song about wooing a woman off the streets. After I’d wailed out the song, my hips swinging lustfully, I was greeted by some familiar banter from people in the crowd: ‘I don’t know what you are, but I like it,’ and: ‘I’m not usually queer, but tonight I might be’.

Even a couple of gay men approached me and asked me to join them that night with the caveat that they were never usually interested in my ‘gear’. The feeling of simultaneously confusing and confirming lustful desire in these humans – desire that they may not have confronted in themselves before – was so electric. I felt it in my chest.

I came out as non binary when I was 29, and trans masc when I was 33. As a young human, I was consistently dressed in hand-me-downs I inherited from my older brother. I knew, even as a kid, that I didn’t want to subscribe to the classic ‘becoming a woman’ trope. I played sports with the boys while learning to dance and sing.
